Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
